Welcome to Outside View, a group blog broadly exploring the long term future. Related subjects we hope to cover include societal progress and existential risk, how to think about predictions and what long term trends might look like.
We've been inspired by writers like Scott Alexander, Tyler Cowen, Rob Wiblin, and Toby Ord. In particular, this project grew out of our group's discussion of Tyler Cowen's call for more blogs to apply the ideas of liberty and reason to modern problems.
We're interested in discussing policy solutions although wary of partisan labels, but our approach is broadly based in the liberal tradition. More than anything, we are consequentialists and believe the long term future is currently undervalued and underdiscussed. The vast majority of humanity lies in the future, and even small increases in existential risk could be devastating to future generations.
